Welcome to Ceridwen’s Sonnet!
In Welsh legend, Ceridwen—goddess of rebirth and transformation and possessor of a cauldron of poetic inspiration—literally swallowed a man in order to give birth to the first recorded Welsh poet, Taliesin. Thus, a nation of bards was born.
On Ceridwen’s Sonnet, you’ll find articles on film, poetry, language, fiction, women’s issues, and my own travels and experience as a creative feminist.
A Few Things About Me:
I am a Democratic Socialist born in a Southern state with a rich history and thorny past (and present) when it comes to women and other marginalized groups. Through a combination of hard work and privilege, I find myself in a position to sing out, hopefully to the benefit of all of all who are marginalized.
Poetry is my first creative love, and you will certainly find some of it here. A few of my poetic inspirations include Sharon Olds, Sandra Gilbert, Margaret Atwood, and William Blake.
Literature follows quite naturally as my second love. A few of my favorite authors are Margaret Atwood, Haruki Murakami, Octavia Butler, C.J. Cherryh, Ursula K. LeGuin, and Carol Berg. If you can’t tell by my taste in literature, I believe Science Fiction and Horror are the creative frontiers of feminism and social change. You’ll definitely see articles along that line here.
My favorite foods are curry and barbecue, which I like to believe makes me a complex person.
I’m a language nerd. I’ve studied French and German in the past, and am currently putting my heart and soul into attaining fluency in Welsh, Iaith y Nefoedd, with my Welsh descendant husband, with the aim of raising our children bilingually in English and Welsh.
I love self-study, yoga, Jungian dream interpretation, and personality tests. I’m a 9 on the Enneagram and an ISFJ per the MBTI. I believe introspection is a requirement of becoming a whole, spiritually and emotionally responsible person.
This brings me to my Christian faith, without which I believe my point of view would be incomplete. The environment in which I grew up led me on a complicated journey to my present perspective on my faith. I could (and probably will) write many words on the subject, but briefly, I believe in a living, inclusive, and socially responsible Gospel. I hope to follow Jesus’ example and flip some tables with my words.
If your faith or beliefs are different from mine, I believe we can still share the same mission: to fight oppression, marginalization, and suffering in our world. If that sounds reasonable to you, all the rest is just noise.
That’s me in a nutshell! If you’d like to know more, stay tuned for further blog posts, or drop me a line on my contact page!
